If you're disgusted by the casual racism & misogyny that in endemic on the ML subreddit, let me tell you: this is NOT representative of the ML community. The majority of these people aren't in ML at all - the remainder are its worst elements, the goo at the bottom of the barrel.pic.twitter.com/6A5D8t99yK

The ML community is in no way perfect. But in its majority it's made of good people. Don't get discouraged by what you may see on Reddit - this would be like judging the food of a restaurant by sampling its garbage cans. For what it's worth, no researcher I know posts on Reddit.

It's not an ML thing it's a reddit thing. I've seen the same on other supposedly tech oriented subreddits.

I've only worked with one African American in engineering. I'd love to see more diversity in technical fields.

One of the biggest reasons it's HARD to get and KEEP more Blacks in tech in general. Until society matures enough to recognize and respect the talent of people that may not look like the white or asian majority in the tech field, this will continue.

Didn't you just get a bunch of hate here for promoting black devs' portfolios? ML/tech is not perfect but it's certainly complicit given the apps that already been produced.

Agreed. The thing I really dislike about Reddit is that it's this self-selected, non-representative sample of humanity that presents itself as the baseline "normal" for opinions and consensus—but actually has some pretty bizarre beliefs.

I think the field is problematic. Racism & sexism does exist in ML and AI community. Not to mention elitism & nationalism. Its a human thing.

Makes me wonder then: is there a field where this is not the case?
