People started saying "we're past the peak" in the last days of March / first days of April. There have been 10x more new cases after that "peak" than before. For now. yes it is almost as if we all should have realized that plotting nothing but the derivative for months would lead laypeople to falsely conclude that the actual slope was decreasing.
