Language is sometimes confused for thinking. That's a category error. Language is a tool to express, organize, store, and recall thoughts. It works for most types of thought, but not all. And there are other ways to express thoughts -- gestures, facial expressions, drawings, etc.

Do you believe that language directs the formulation of thoughts? For example, if we do not have native words for concepts, does it limit us? I think about this often as it applies to people of other languages, cultures, etc..that it expands us, in part, due to language expansion

Yes, language is an operating system for thinking. You can think more with language than without, not all languages are equal, and you can think even more in written language.

If you speak multiple languages on a good level you sometimes think in other languages or even switch between on the fly, or reiterate on another language. Makes it easier to emphasize something or understand the way of thinking by knowing the native language of a person.

This is why conversations with others (whether written or verbal) are so helpful for organization, evaluation, and utilization of information for decision-making. There’s a (computer) science behind talk therapy and journaling (😉 folks trying to convince loved ones to open up).

1/1 Language is a translator to express what we feel. It is very restrictive both in terms of time spent to convert feelings/ideas into words and in selecting the correct words to define exactly what we want to express so there are no misunderstandings...

2/1 Thought is language in our heads that we mull over and are often distracted by. We over think many things resulting in confusion. To gain clarity, we often need to put aside all thoughts. There is an innate process that comes before language and thought.

"You can think more with language than without" this is probably not true as someone who never thinks in language. In my opinion words are very low bandwidth, selected for conveying ideas to other beings.

And what of people like Tesla who are said to have been able to visualize whole dynamic systems in his head? I imagine a word cloud floating about his head with "sprocket" and "drive shaft".

This is Sapir-Whorf and is very controversial. Big claim and one I think is kinda nonsense.

Linguistic determinism hasn’t fared well, but the more reasonable hypothesis that languages encode meaning differently and create channels that encourage one to perceive objects and situations differently has. Not equal is not to say one is better than the other.
