Every line of code holds an ethical and moral implication. How one spends their time writing code - for whom and for what purpose they write it - is a choice framed by one's ethical and moral framework.https://twitter.com/ylecun/status/1269023762646736901 …

Still proud, yes. I'm trying to be a decent person. You just have the wrong idea about Facebook. Facebook is a force for good in popular protest movements. Even if the platform can also be used by people we oppose. The Floyd murder video was published in FB, after all.

      1. Tech is never neutral. If it has an impact on the world, then this impact has a moral direction. 2. The existence of Facebook and its effort to support the Trump campaign is the #1 reason why Trump could still be reelected (together with Fox News, which has much less reach).

Everything has an impact on the world, or a potential to have one. Having an impact does not imply moral direction.

an XML Parser might be "neutral", but the application of tech (XML Parser, etc) to build an ad targeting platform, used for political reasons and others, is not

Fox News probably has more impact on people who actually go to vote, eg. Retired pp.

I see this every day. Common falsehoods, rumor and prejudice are spread person to person within private neighborhood groups. Is this just human nature or is Facebook optimizing for this?

You cannot try to social engineer away the "Trump problem". People have a lot more agency then you think they have.

#1 reason why Trump would win: many people like him #2 reason: not all votes are equal, Clinton "won" last time #3 is mass media, press,… Anyway, the world cannot depend on SV or US, it is time for the Internet. In 2015, when Trump decided to run, he was the top trending news topic on Google news every day-at a time when Fox was totally ignoring him because he won’t tow the conservative ideology. Considering Trump spent less on Ads, it’s obvious he played with Google algos as well

François, I think you’re brilliant, and I do believe Facebook can and should better regulate its platform from intentional manipulation, but doesn’t this seem a tad too far? Zuck actively trying to re-elect Trump?
