What about doing the same with video + a shared doc? Probably not the same "feeling" but I feel it is close enough.

I had to teach someone graph searching algorithms via video chat. I ended up using Jamboard on my iPad with my Apple Pencil. It was not the same as whiteboarding, but it came pretty damn close to it.

That's exactly what we do as well. And now that everyone has gotten used to it, I actually think it works better than whiteboarding (results are saved, you can prepare stuff more easily, ...)

I like technology and good old fashioned chalk on blackboards. It's up to you. Calling people directly is easy to. Texting.

We use zoom + iPad + Apple pen. It works very well. My son attends his tutoring sessions also that way. It works really well.

Yeah and screen mirroring with the notability app, you can use graph paper and insert diagrams
