This really captures the way many researchers have been conditioned to think of research. Not exploring the unknown, generating useful knowledge and reusable techniques -- but claiming a small piece of territory in a crowded parking lothttps://twitter.com/yin_psyched/status/1257858534844387328 …

Reminds me of the apple Samsung lawsuits where both companies thought they invented detecting a phone number. Turns out it was done in ... the 80s with DOS

Among some of the folks who are slightly new to the field there's a bid to publish research papers for the sake of accomplishments rather than for actual research, as a way to demonstrate expertise in the area for career advancements.not to advance ML/AI.

In my little experience of research I found out that there's little incentive to explore the unknown. The thing that matter is to publish papers, and to do that you reach for the low hanging fruits (unfortunately)

😃 We achieved Apr. 6 a research on the way Covid19 is treated (in the USA) — delivering novel results (still novel on May 7) with deep public health implications, but NLP => 'off topic' for medRxiv 1/2

        — NLP algorithm with great results on medium-sized collections, but invented in the 80's => no chance on arXiv (where Covid19-related collections of millions of tweets + LDA abound…) — 'Go to socRxiv' => very few users + the site does not work. => Keep parking your car at home

Then broaden your interpretation of the post until you can empathize with the experience being communicated. A bit of irony in assuming you're an outlier when you're probably just not giving the benefit of the doubt. Could reapply the meme photos here.
