How many countries could manufacture a state-of-the-art smartphone from scratch (raw materials), I wonder? One? Five?

Which are?

I count 5. It's an interesting thought experiment when thinking about building cities on Mars. US, China, Japan, South Korea, Germany.

Curious how you went about your model. Still trying to dig up an *exhaustive* list of raw materials extent in a finished <$100 smartphone, and I have little hope of accounting for all the inputs to intermediate processes (the tooling and facilities I generously assume exist).

Sure that US and Germany are able to produce quality and quantity from scratch ? I would say 3 asian countries. Practical production knowledge is not any more in EU nor US.

If you really go down all the way to the raw minerals, I'd bet it's zero. It's probably zero for pretty much any product involving computer components.
