Looking back on my school years, one thing that strikes me is that they never taught us the meta. They gave us theorems & formulas, but they never talked about the general processes & techniques you can use to approach & solve problems. Or about how to get better at learning.

We were left to figure how that part ourselves, on our own. And we did, confusedly, awkwardly. From direct experience, through trial & error. It was horribly inefficient. Because, naturally, the meta is a science. It can, and should be taught.

Of course, it is learning "how to learn" and "how to solve problems" that really matters (or even the more specialized "how to prove theorems"). The content -- specific pieces of knowledge -- is unimportant. I've already forgotten all of the theorems. Only the meta remains.

Closest thing to a meta class in uni was a grad finance class -- prof examined daily papers from the globe and discussed cigarette economies in prison camps. Best class ever. Thanks Prof Spelman!

I went to a high school for “gifted” kids for a bit and that’s how most things were taught… for example we learned less calculus theorems at first, instead spending a lot of time on why functions behaved the way they did, which then made the calculus theorems seem more intuitive

Only history and foreign languages were taught the same as the traditional public schools iirc

How would you design a curriculum/course to teach this skill?

The most useful course at university that I took, that I use Every. Single. Day. is how to search information catalogues and how the retrieval engines work. I even won a prize for being the best student in that class: a @DialogSols goodie bag. ♥ :-)

I felt incredibly insecure and self-conscious about it for years, I felt I was doing it wrong, was missing something, until I heard enough stories to be convinced this is actually how it goes for just about everyone :)

I am reading this book called ultra learning... It has an excellent take on meta learning! So true... Before reading this book! I did not even know that the larger picture had to be thought of consciously before starting anything for that matter...

A lot of people didn't, though. If you managed to learn how to learn from the school system, despite having parents who themselves don't know, you got really lucky. I can think of literally one or two teachers that even acknowledged it at all. It's really frustrating and sad.
