One of the reasons why there is no society-level will to address climate change is that journalists tend to cover it the same way they covered COVID-19 in January. "It's just the flu" - "don't panic"

Apparently many journalists believe, implicitly or explicitly, that part of their job is to reassure the public. "Everything will be okay, the show must go on".

Everyone fears pain of a bleak future outlook - even media folks. There is a tremendous amount of denialism abt a future that doesn’t always get better. Hence, we get reopening attempts next. It has to get better, doesn’t it?

Not such a bad take, but, as an expert in "learning"... don't you think society has issues with learning from a historical standpoint ? I mean individuals end up learning things but society mostly fails to do so.. so far.

It's a small part of it. A much bigger problem is that the society looks at journalists for truth (or even facts)... not recognizing that any media outlet is a profit-driven business, never truth- or facts-driven one. Just a testament to how lazy and stupid general public is.

It’s as if covid is a small scale model of climate change disaster. The west had a lot of time to prepare but governments brushed it off until it hit them hard. People are just terrible at acting on problems with delayed impact.

There are many notable exceptions such as @emorwee, @WeAreDrilled , @MaryHeglar @amywestervelt . But yeah, for the big outlets it is mostly true and a huge problem.

I strongly agree with 99% of your tweets However, I have no idea about what to do about all of your tweets that do not involve code Something has to be done!, but what?, how? If you could answer these questions, I think you could increase your impact 1 or 2 orders of magnitude

Time to make NLP that prioritize info, huge progress can be made thru classification of display, when properly done tho, can still be income generating content.

Is this just a journalist problem? Are scientists all unanimous on this one?
