Not that I read/watch much sci-fi, but I began to find the genre interesting only sometime later in life than one would expect and for the reasons you mention. In fact the "magical" tech never appealed to me as a kid - it seemed too "easy", in a way.

I still dream about a Star Trek-ish future. Growing up watching TNG with my dad really influenced my idea of what type of world to aspire to - peaceful, equitable, where everyone has the opportunity to self-actualize, and there’s a large cultural focus on science and philosophy
