Many technologists see sci-fi ideas as blueprints of cool things to build -- the Multiverse, Mars cities, etc -- when they're more likely to be devices for exploring contemporary trends & issues

As a general rule "cool" sci-fi has no ability to tell us what future we should seek

Have any favourite sci fi novels and writers? Ian banks is good from the new stuff. Hitchhiker's guide is always the best though.

Hitchhiker’s might be one of those books that counter the OP’s assertion ;->

It's sad because most sci-fi is just fear porn, and if you try to emulate sci-fi and copy their aesthetics, fear will always be embedded with it, making any product you make have that apocalyptic undertone to it.

That's the function of a devices in a plot, but it's not the reason they are there. The appeal of sci-fi is that it's possible. Fantasy genere could also explore those contemporary trends & issues (if the writer is skilled enough).

Do you know 1964 "Summa Technologiae" by S.Lem? This is probably the only big work by SF author (but not SF itself) which tries to invent and probe the limits and dangers of future technologies (1964 mind you!) incl: AI, VR, genetic eng., nanotech. etc. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Summa_Technologiae …

Sci-fi talks about our world. Recurring themes: i.e.: Robots/AI - about us: Who are we? Where are we going?; Aliens - the unknown, our fears; Blue pill/red pill - What is our reality?. Made this list of sci-fi material divided by theme if interested:https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/187atRMBqrYZv7SMnLEPx4xzOEmhwtlAriGeO-hLWYuE/edit …
