That certainly isn't a long standing trend (unless I've misunderstood). Tron is over 35 years old and direct adaptations and their derivatives from games to film have been going on for about 30 years. Even Star Wars franchise had sequences designed to promote associated games.

Studios are interested in creating fanboys. Big projects end up funding smaller but higher quality projects. Michael Bay got to make Pain & Gain for 25 millions USD after all those Transformers flicks.
