It's usually possible to turn a complex, long-winded explanation into a simpler & clearer one, without dumbing down the content in the slightest -- it's only a matter of spending much more time & effort finding the right words & images. Both actual illustrations & mental images.

I would argue that the _most_ important thing when explaining complicated stuff in simple terms - is an actual deep understanding of the subject matter. ".. too complicated to explain to you" usually means the opposite of the implied.

I read Taking Smart Notes by Ahrens. Basically: read with a pen, create permanent notes, and keep citations. Writing notes in my own words that capture an idea without jargon was hard to do at first, but it's clarified my thinking and increased the value I get from research.
