The status of each type of media is embedded in human psyche and the need to copy higher forms goes away when the demand and market for those forms decreases.
There is a natural hierarchy among media forms, in the sense that you can see the lower-status ones seek to imitate the higher-status ones. Historically most art forms had cinema envy. I think this is no longer the case

The hierarchy may be natural but all natural hierarchies are dynamic, as production and technology costs bottom out the potential for artistic expression becomes more decentralized. Generating the equivalent of high production cost media is increasingly possible for most firms.
