When buying wine from producers I don't already know, I look at both the price and the aesthetics of the label -- I pick the bottle with the most plain & boring label. The reasoning being that many producers stay alive while selling mediocre wine by having labels that stand out

Same reason to eat at restaurants with bad views. If the view is amazing, the food does not need to be.

I don't take SO extreme criteria. But I absolutely avoid buying bottles with fancy labels, whatever the alcohol, for this very reason. But I'm sad when producers let wonderful products hidden behind dumb labels (e.g. "le Barbotin", a cheese by Mr Barbot in Survie, Normandy).
