Ditto with knowledge, it all re-inforces each other and each new bit of knowledge will be easier to integrate in to the whole. Switching fields is hard. Adding skills is hard. But they compound.

Identifying which problem to solve next is a real problem by itself. So how do I seek out problems that improve my problem classification skills? Perhaps problems that can be determined quickly as novel&difficult or not are where to start.
