Philosophy is often mocked by people in tech. But I like philosophy. Everything of value I've ever done falls squarely under the label "philosophy". Philosophy is potent, actionable, and practical like nothing else.

The purpose of philosophy isn't really to produce concrete theories (which are generally flawed products of their time), or to give you useful "life tips". Philosophy isn't science or engineering. The main purpose of philosophy is to provide you with building blocks for thinking

The value of reading philosophy lies not in the names & theories you will be able to recall, but in the way they expand your future thoughts. Just like how the value of learning to code isn't in the toy programs you write in the process, but in the new way of thinking you gained

So it isn't very relevant to point out that philosophers X or Y were "wrong". I'm sure they were; we all are. But perhaps they were interesting. Can your rebuttal teach me as much as their flawed ideas did?

Yes, we are fallible and human learning is a self-correcting process. Still, some errors can be deeply disorienting and have extremely long-lasting and widespread destructive effects. Intelligent, sensible and responsible criticism is of the essence of 'doing philosophy'.

You can also say that about conspiracy theories. People watching about flat earth or ancient aliens may also claim that it was interesting and that they learned something. So I don't think that this argument is a good defense of philosophy.

Nope. This is not compatible with Platonism, which states the existence of an absolute truth and beauty. You need to reject Platonism flatly in order to write these sentences. If we don't call unproductive philosophies unproductive, they never die. Take an action, bury them.

Francois, who are your favourite philosophers? (Mine are Kant and Schopenhauer and Wittgenstein and Sellars and Brandom).

i far prefer interesting. in fact it's my highest compliment to a person. interesting is engaging. it's the process of give and take, discovery, and hopefully lessons learned.

A corollary in tech is learning new programming languages. The value for me in learning BASIC, COBOL, Pascal, etc., was less the obsolete language (not completely, judging from news about "legacy" government systems 🤣) but learning how to think & analyze differently. 🤔👍pic.twitter.com/A9nfsaWIwQ
