I used to think the CDC had things under control, and that if there was an epidemic coming, they'd know well in advance and ensure the appropriate measures were taken.https://twitter.com/YAppelbaum/status/1243600492988637193 …

I need a respite from a mailbox full of essays from people who’ve discovered that present events confirm their long-held beliefs. If the events of the last few weeks have changed your mind, what did have they changed your mind about, and why?

I have less faith in general in "the authorities" as a result of this epidemic. I'm involved in several different efforts to fight Covid-19 (PPE, testing, vaccines, etc) and the weak link in all of them is some government body.

It is thanks to effective government response that places like South Korea were able to promptly get the epidemic under control. A functional government is an invaluable asset, worth investing in.

You should stop touting SK as better. US at 6x the pop. is similar in TRUE rate of infection and death. And has actually responded far more effectively, when evaluated without bias. (U must extrap. only from # deaths. # infections depends far too much on levels of testing.)

I've seen these kinds of arguments before. The thing is, SK infection is close to contained. US is still going exponential. Your comparison will not age well, and by "age" I mean in a few days.

Ok, so how do you explain South Korea's gov doing such a great job?

Yes, but it's not just about throwing money at it. A huge part of the issue has been well funded agencies that turned into bureacratic nightmares and were unable to respond in a time of crises.
