The reason for the lockdowns is to stop the exponential spread of the virus. If we go back to "normal" now, exponential spread resumes, and hospitals will be overwhelmed in a matter of weeks.https://twitter.com/atrupar/status/1242120405189627905 …

Lockdowns buy us time to set up an extensive testing + tracking + isolating system, which is the only way to contain the virus (before a vaccine). If you want to know when the epidemic will be over, ask yourself, how much progress have we made on that system?

President blew the chance to contain the spread like 2 months ago. Instead of taking ques from S Korea and Singapore, and preemptively handling this crisis, there was widespread conspiracy theories spread by the WH and the right wing media.

Lockdowns give an opportunity to the the healthcare systems to scale at an exponential rate too, along with the virus. And probably the cross the curve and beat the culprit.

reality seems to be nothing will contain this except *many months* in lockdown.. i dont know much about economy, but i would guess this'll end up in a meltdown. UK's deserted plan of only isolating the vulnerable made the most sense.

They are doing this because they know that they will be able to say that the deaths were inevitable and they did the best that they could to not *also* kill the economy. It's wrong, of course, but to voters it is plausible enough and that's all they care about.

Also, the people at the top will earn a *lot* if money off of this and believe that they will get sufficient care anyway, even if public hospitals fail. Trump is not going to accept the worst crash in living memory during his presidency. It's his personal life scoreboard.

I didn't understand this, and none of my friends did either. The "how long is this going to last" question is being asked a lot, and this is the perfect response. Thanks!
