Anybody out there still worried about AI taking over the world and all that? Didn't think so...

The people I know who are seriously worried about AI safety are _also_, for the most part, the people I know who, 6 months ago, were most concerned about global pandemics. They're seeming prescient to me, now, and making me wonder if I worry too little about AI safety.

The main person I know who's worried about AI ending humanity is Elon "the Coronavirus panic is dumb" Musk

To be fair, he is mostly worried about sentient robots taking over the world, not real problems that AI researchers are talking about.

Respectfully, I think he was referring to the “panic” being dumb. Which to be fair an unmeasured reaction to any situation is dumb.

Elon Musk has clarified in a painfully detailed series of statements that he really did think COVID-19 was no big deal, that concerns about it were overblown, and that everyone should get back to work. Wise & prescient as usual

Try @ESYudkowsky, who on 2/17 tweeted wondering why the markets weren’t responding to covid yet

Please don't base your assessment of AI safety on Elon's behavior. Have you read Nick Bostrom?

Yet he invests and uses AI as much as he can in the products he sells. 🤔

Musk is about the one exception you'll find to Michael's point and I reckon you probably know that. He's been making an absolute twat of himself on this topic for the last few weeks and I say that as someone who's generally a fan.
