Possible side-effects of Chloroquine include damage to the retina, depression, and even psychosis. It has not yet been demonstrated to treat COVID-19. If it were to be, it should only be taken by patients experiencing acute symptoms, since it is *not* a benign medication.

Agree, the tweet sounds more emotional than analytic.

That's long-term use, not taking it for a month.

We used to give this to the guys going to Africa on the Merchant Ships. We were always told it is a very strong drug with lasting side effects if I remember correctly. Along with Lariam and Doxy, Malaria drugs I believe are strong and no joke.

Chloroquine has much less adverse effects than Lariam. Lariam has replaced Chloroquine at a time just because malaria was becoming more and more often resistant to Chloroquine. Now artemisinin ~replaced them.

It is a quite benign medication (as opposed to e.g. other considered antiviral drugs). Maybe one billion of people already took it, and the suggested dose is not uncommon. Yet there are contraindications, so I would rephrase : "it should be taken on medical prescription only."
