Out of curiosity, why the perception that chemistry isn't usually cool? Was it a particular experience with it or is there a feeling that the material is too dry and/or buried on the other side of a steep learning curve?

Sorry to hear you've had dried out material, for me it's always been fascinating from the perspective of the weird emergent zone between "just chemistry" and "that's alive". Would recommend von Bertanlaffny's "General Systems Theory" for a great view of the distinction.
