Looks like this crisis is best handled by Eastern democracies so far. China also at first had problems with misinformation and acting too late.
Every time a crisis arises that Western democracies handle poorly (often because of structural causes), the long-term survival chances of Western liberalism decrease a little.

democracies are a lot older than you give them credit for and life only 200 years ago was arguably much more brutal and less stable

I'm not so sure. Firstly, look at the alternatives; if something is done poorly but still better than others (for varying metrics but especially transparency) then not relatively bad. Secondly, look at longer term reaction. Is it a cover up or is it fixing a weakness?

Authoritarian systems tend towards cover-ups, lack transparency and this makes them rigid. They can work well while the foundational assumptions are sound, but they don't adapt when times change, on a longer time horizon.

All of these cultural systems have different merits in different contexts. As the context shifts the perceived value can go up or down. In a world that needs extreme coordination current liberalism seems inefective however an increase in group mentality might preserve liberalism

Younger generations already appear to think this way. It is mainly older generations who feel extreme liberty is a main priority. Younger people realise there is no point to liberty if it results in a reduction in quality of life or an unhealthy planet.
