Social media has conditioned people (including highly educated folks) to uncritically accept incredible claims if they have the right packaging, but also to uncritically accept a superficial "debunking" of solid claims in the same way. Seems driven more by values than by reason

Superficial skepticism is an attitude, an identity -- people who see themselves as skeptics will eat up any "let's debunk this!" story without doing any sort of fact checking

Clearly, these are fake skeptics. True contrarians would never fall for this. Every argument needs to be evaluated critically.

just another shade of confirmation bias, is it not?

As a scientist, scepticism of claims is the correct default position, although one should always whether claims have support from wider experience. Even peer reviewed literature is riddled with false claims (Ioannidis 2005 estimated 50% of peer reviewed papers are false)

Given this poor rate within reviewed literature, it is safe to assume social media is much, much worse. Scepticism is the right place to start with any claim. Of course groupthink and echo chambers are the greatest risks to reasoning, scepticism is the prophylaxis

The medium is the message (cfr. McLuhan) Humans are cognitively biased (cfr. Kahneman).
