Social media has conditioned people (including highly educated folks) to uncritically accept incredible claims if they have the right packaging, but also to uncritically accept a superficial "debunking" of solid claims in the same way. Seems driven more by values than by reason

Superficial skepticism is an attitude, an identity -- people who see themselves as skeptics will eat up any "let's debunk this!" story without doing any sort of fact checking

Too many people, including educated folks, "want to believe". I see it happening constantly, even when you provide facts and data they seem to ignore them and keep looping around their believes

Fact checking has never been easier than today (remember the times you had to walk to the university library and sift through index cars) But retweeting is so much easier. The convenient option is to amplify the message that aligns with your value/belief.

I wonder whether the amount of disinformation has increased faster than the amnt of valid information since the rise of the internet and since the rise of social media

It's driven by intelligence. Intelligence is efficiently achieving the desired results. The shortest, least energy consumed method for assessing information as relevant, correct or wrong is to apply previously learned generalizations.

You do it too as you ignore this post because you didn't write it nor is it from an academic that you know, nor is the wording sufficiently intellectual, nor is it from a trusted source. Examining ideas for what they are takes extra work that few are willing to expend.

True, even famous and prestigous sci mag's did it. Thanks to them we so have now a new wave of anti-vaccine advocates.
