I don't have the expertise to judge the soundness of the study, but have you considered that: 1) Perhaps a team of 17 MDs with direct experience with COVID-19 know what they're talking about (more than casual pundits) 2) Forward testing is the ultimate test of a ML model
3) Training data size looks reasonable for a DL model, metrics are consistent, all sanity checks pass. It's COVID-19 so of course we shouldn't expect hundreds of thousands of samples at the time of writing.
