One of the most ridiculously unserious ideas I've ever come across is that the "invention" of language is something that can be pinned to a specific point in time, in the very recent past (50k-70k years ago), and that it is what makes Homo Sapiens oh-so-special & superior

Language, culture, complex social structures, and advanced technology gradually co-evolved over *hundreds of thousands of years* (700+k), very slowly. And they were not exclusive to Homo Sapiens. Neanderthals, Denisovans (who diverged from Homo Sapiens 700k years ago) had them.

These furless apes were thriving in harsh environments where you wouldn't last 2 days -- how primitive do you think they were? We have archeological evidence that pre-humans were hunting big game in groups using wooden & stone weapons at least 400k yrs agohttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sch%C3%B6ningen_spears …

Fully with you on this. It’s ridiculous that people think language was invented just 50-60 thousand years ago!

Yes I always wonder how humans would have started even the logic of assigning meanings to words. They wouldn't have even known the meaning of the word "meaning"! Very interesting concept! 😍

Why do you think other species haven't developed language?

General concept of language is common among history of animals. Not just evolution of language of Homo-sapiens but the turning point to introspection & creation/use of higher level abstractions. Disconnection from direct physical reality based expression. see: Julian Jaynes

Once again people are likely mistaking correlation for causation. Language is the fruit of a complex culture and advanced social corpus, themselves the fruit of economy, trade and migrations as last discoveries on sapiens and neandertals are showing.

👏🏻An idea that DL helped me to grasp, by abstracting away from human experience, was the teleology of art. It seemed to be impossible due to the polivalence of art itself. But art is an encoding of experience, where the levels of allowed entropy are instrumentally explored.

Language is based on Symbol. Homo Sapiens are symbolic creature. Invention of Language unleashed the power of symbol.
