I find petty nationalism in science & engineering quite sad. The people getting the work done in our field form a very international community. And I'd like to think we're wise enough to be above this nonsense

This isn't petty, its one of the most fundamental qualities being human. Group selection is a real thing, we just forget about it because we've been on the winning side for so long.

Should engineering and science researchers not aim to provide some form of value/return to those that fund their research? Funding that mostly comes from national institutions (eg NSERC) pursuing largely national interests with some international intersections.

no. you may be a pawn in the system but your personal values don’t have to align with whatever institution is funding you

Well, I hope we can agree that the surveillance state work being pioneered by our friends in China is problematic.

It depends on the importance of the technology, the scale of conflict, and values difference. It’s perfectly rational for CV researchers to not work with China, given how their surveillance state runs. Read the history of fission research in WWII, before the war started.

For example, @pjreddie made a thoughtful decision to stop CV research based on how certain countries and companies are doing it. https://twitter.com/pjreddie/status/1230524770350817280?s=21 …https://twitter.com/pjreddie/status/1230524770350817280 …

I stopped doing CV research because I saw the impact my work was having. I loved the work but the military applications and privacy concerns eventually became impossible to ignore. https://twitter.com/RogerGrosse/status/1230514017543872512?s=20 …

Well, in France we get educated almost for free by our country. Being loyal to that great system is needed to make it work.
