People ask me, "if AGI is such a tainted term, what should people interested in generality call it?" It's a research direction, not a destination. A pragmatic answer is to call it "broad AI", or simply "artificial cognitive abilities" (in opposition to task-specific skills).
We're not going to get to generality overnight -- we're going to slowing climb there with AI of increasing flexibility, leveraging increasingly broad abilities. If you're moving in that direction, it should be enough -- and more realistic -- to say you're working on "broader AI".
Wait for it to exist before naming it. Also artificial and intelligence are nebulus terms that signify hype.
So.. you think that cognitive abilities are broad in the dense of univerdal or broader than narrow?
If you take offense from anything, there eventually won’t be a stringed together mush left, that can remotely describe the phenomena aimed at, so you can suit an agenda.

Another problem is that 99% of them are interested in generality as an aim, but not as a research direction. They want it, but they don’t believe they need to put in the effort to achieve it.
