Intellectual maturity is caring more about solutions & progress than about flag-plantinghttps://twitter.com/RickCarlsson/status/1229883227348885507 …

      François Chollet added,

      Rickard Carlsson @RickCarlsson
PhD student : I hope no one scoops my only idea. Post-doc: I better publish old stuff before I’m scooped so I can focus on new ideas. Associate professor: I hope someone scoops all ideas I’ve ever had. Please. I don’t have time. There’s free datasets too. I’ll pay you.

Most young scientists love science and want to keep doing it, and every paper increases the odds that you will be allowed to keep doing it. When valuable work in the early years is scooped, it markedly reduces those chances.

Easy to think this way after having your career secured. Getting scooped as a graduate student can easily break everything. Some papers are a representation of 3+ years worth of work. Try to convince a graduate student that time lost was a good thing in the end..
