The main reason I dislike this nonsense: generality in artificial intelligence is a serious research topic, with real stakes & real applications, with both near-term & long-term progress to be made. These ridiculous sci-fi stories, that shape public perception, are an obstacle.

It's like... working on blood testing research in a world where a secretive company has raised $1.4B to build a mysterious device that can test anything from a single blood drop. In the mind of the public, it's the only narrative they can think of when you bring up your research

And yet -- it's serious, life-saving research. No thanks to cult-like profiteers who overpromise and underdeliver.

Well whatever you think it should or shouldn't be, people will still be working away at it. If they can't get people to invest billions then it definitely won't happen any time soon. 1/2

2/2 So let the investors'n startups'n research labs do their PR to raise billions, it will help speed up progress. If we didn't have the space race and billions spent to do something that seemed impossible (go to the moon) we'd be years behind on many technologies and knowledge

I think that in addition to a good PR, an accepting mindset induced through experience aslo plays a major role in people abandoning their critical thinking towards a field. People can and have been firsthandedly experiencing the advances in AI,(1/2)

but this does not apply to the other two fields. As nontechnical people rarely use the state of the art medical equipment(2/2)

There’s the old joke that asks the question: what is the difference between a software engineer and a used car salesman? The answer is that the car salesman *knows* he’s lying.
