It may seem like an incredibly obvious thing to say, but: a democratic nation that votes authoritarians into power and that cannot muster mass protests to defend the rule of law or human rights when threatened, cannot possibly stay democratic for very long.
(Spoiler: there will be no mass protests, not now, nor at further stages)
It's not a single 'authoritarian' being voted in, it's authoritarian capitalism triumphant. Unregulated capitalism replaced the social compact that preceded it, a compact modified, at a social well-being level, by ideological competition with the USSR. Nothing left to prove now.
A democracy consisting of only two parties cannot meaningfully exist anyway. I believe the question in the US is whether to save a meritocratic oligarchy or move deeper into a nepotic oligarchy; not save democracy.
