It is curious (or perhaps not at all) that as ML research has grown more chaotic and anarchic in the past few years (barrier for entry has gone down -- a great thing -- which is ONE factor), it has also become much more homogeneous (idea generation wise) than it was 10 years ago.

I keep thinking that might be the case; you may be right. But I am not too sure, actually. It seems to me to be a phase of greedy exploit. I have started respecting math depts much more than before now. They do their own thing, and don't need to be show-men, so they are freer.
