Kind of, but luck helps too. The things that happen do matter, especially cumulatively. If truly terrible things happen right from the start, and are relentless, then someone less smart/ less good and less patient, with better luck may end up more interesting/successful/kind

Absolutely! Free will is against the more basic knowledge of how things happen in the whole universe. Believing we have some control in anything we do instead of just automatically responding to inputs is to me like believing God has some responsability in what happens to us...

another possibility is not thinking in terms of action, instead of reaction. In that way, not even what we do is somehow linked to the situation. Things happen and we can act accordingly to what is in our essence & do to the extend of what we can about it.
