I'd been away from Twitter for 2 weeks -- not by choice. Scrolling again today, and the stupidity, aggressiveness, and meanness feel overwhelming. Maybe staying away is the wiser option.

The great thing about Twitter is that you can read live thoughts from interesting people. The terrible thing is that any random troll can @ them their brain farts. Users can choose who to follow. They should also be also to disable replies from people they don't follow.

I don't get why I am forced by the app to give a wide public platform to these guys. Being away from Twitter was psychologically freeing -- no daily insults, no constant influx of gross ignorance and stupidity and dudes being mad at what they imagine other people are like.pic.twitter.com/u04dQ1WExx

I tend to disagree (being a random here myself). Of course there are a lot of trolls out there, but disabling all responses would just mean that no new perspectives and (contra) thoughts from outside of the own follow bubble would be shown.

You can have a private Twitter account and you can mute or block people who cannot or don't want to join a conversation in a civil and valuable way, which is what I'm trying to do with this tweet.

It is really hard to not become a troll on social media. Every other day after reading so many stupid tweets, I have to remind myself "I don't have a concern with this so don't reply" but still often I fail.

It needs curating. The downside to disabling replies from people you don't follow is that you would block any replies from some of those "interesting people" that you follow but that don't follow you. I just block people I don't want to hear from again.

However remote the possibility, I would hate to preemptively stop a tweet from many of the people I follow but that don't follow me.

Not quite that simple. A lot of new info comes from outside one's circle. Perhaps a one-click Mute button next to every reply.

Global - Anybody can reply
Group -Only people you follow + mention can reply
Panel - Only people you mention in the tweet can reply
Statement - Nobody can reply
