A task-specific solution program has no intelligence of its own. It's merely the output artifact of the process of intelligence. "Intelligence" is what happens in the mind of the 5-year-old kid who, looking at a *new* task, understands it and develops a solution protocol.
The single biggest misconception in AI is the confusion b/t unintelligent output artifacts (skill programs) & the process that generates them. "Artificial intelligence" has been focusing purely on task-specific automation, entirely disregarding intelligence. Time to change that.

If we were able to create “intelligence” wouldn’t that essentially achieve the goal of AGI?
What do you think are the basic elements and relational operations of such an intelligence? For example in a naive way a state machine which generates states where every state generates/creates a skill or I'd call it a closed loop control system for each state?
Brilliant observation. There is no intelligence in "Artificial Intelligence" as of now. It's just sophisticated rules.

What do you think about the Jeff Hawkins approach detailed in his book “On Intelligence” ? I think we really need a complete mimicry of our brain (not math driven) .Irrationality plays a role on intelligence and in creativity (breaking some logic rules in a jazz solo)
Very true. Intelligence is intuitive. What we have now in the name of Machine Learning and Deep Learning is a sophisticated rules generator.

the focus has been on specific hard tasks because it's actually possible to make progress on them. combining and generalizing the solutions found is a plausible route to 'general intelligence'
