What's deep learning? The "common usage" definition as of 2019 would be "chains of differentiable parametric layers trained end-to-end with backprop". But this definition seems overly restrictive to me. It describes *how we do DL today*, not *what it is*.

Yes though things 'like' an advanced LSTM or GAN could certainly do intermediate representation and symbol manipulation. No reason to put symbolic outside scope of DL. I agree the layers of more and more abstract features as the mechanism for search and generalization is key.

Yeah, I think hierarchical representation learning makes much more sense, but somehow the deep should imply exactly what deep means - deep hierarchies. You have papers claiming that they do deep RL with 2-layered NNs

Deep Learning has a similar semantic strength to the term “Dynamic Programming” In the future it will obviously be merged into other compsci. This is already happening right now with meta heuristics and data augmentation using reinforcement learning, which crosses fields..
