IMO a key to doing creative work productively is to strike a good balance b/t taking the work seriously (so you don't give up & maintain high quality standards) but not too seriously (so you're not afraid of mistakes/experiments & you're not paralyzed by the need for perfection)

Being paralyzed by the need for perfection is an alien concept to me.

Don't forget, that a work that may appear to be of lesser value may later be revealed to have greater value/relevance than originally thought. IOW, don't throw anything away. But experiment, always!

To find that balance, you need to have very friendly work environment. No extreme pressure from the business side and full support from your coworkers and managers

I also think that doing creative work itself depends on striking a balance between efficiently operating in a structure imposed by following rules, and breaking them with "a fine disregard"* in interesting ways.

So many tensions like this in life, which is why I always say "life is an optimization problem." exploit::explore try hard::not too hard live like you're dead tomorrow::live like it's the first day of the rest of your life let it go::don't let go think deeply::laugh lightly

I recommend the book “Creative minds” by Howard Gardner. You are describing the delicate balance required for creative breakthroughs. Not just the “creative” person, but the syncronicity of supportive entourage and events.
