The French will use the slightest excuse to go on strike & mass protest. Meanwhile Americans can't muster any form of protest, even as their democracy is being dismantled brick by brick, or to demand basic rights such as access to healthcare. Surely there must be a middle ground.

You can demand better, but only if you realize it's up to you

Somewhat misleading statistic, but the reality is just as ugly for all kinds of associated income-related issues.

This discrepancy is crazy! Crazy telling of the absurdity, so crazy I feel obligated to ask for sources if anyone knows good ones, as a quick google seems to suggest lack of clarity and lots of non-primary citation rabbit holes :(

The trade off is public medicine is horrible at advancing medical knowledge and innovation. The problem in the US is unlike eye, teeth and enhancement surgeries people don't shop for hospital care. Hospitals charge whatever they want. There's little incentive to control cost.

It should be a requirement to have insurance. There should also be a law that requires hospitals to list fees up front and a percentage pay to control how much a hospital charges and encourage shopping. Just 2 states in the US allow a person to drive a car without insurance

Holy crap that is a terrible statistic. I knew this was a problem but never realized it was such a huge number. That's on the order of 1:700 Americans, including infants and children, so for working age and pensioned people the number must be far higher still.
