I think skeuomorphism in GUIs was good, and it's a shame that it's gone. Designing websites & apps only using flat color boxes is like making music only using pure sine waves. Design should be art, grounded in our living experience. It should leverage textures, analog references

What killed skeuomorphism is that it made it too easy to be tacky. Good art is hard work. It's easier not to make mistakes when you don't attempt to express anything. However, it leaves you with bland, forgettable designs.

You don't even have to go full skeuomorphic. Just enough differentiation such that each unique function has instantly distinguishable psychosensory feedback so that our instinctual associations can guide us through the technology.

Also big corporate mindset likes bland and boring with no personality or individuality. Sells easier and less risky.

Skeuomorphism imposed on software products the limitations of physical objects, flat design is an evolution because it allows software to look (and work) in the most imaginative ways. Off course the aesthetic is an aspect but is subjective, I think UIs look much prettier now.

Design movements : modern/postmodern/.. are not superior to earlier ones. Unlike technology that becomes progressively better in an objective way, art doesn’t become prettier.. it’s just different from earlier trends.

Nowadays, there are too many informations around all the time, in huge, complicated interfaces this type of design most of the time just looks bad, for apps you're using a lot(i. e. twitter) the overall experience is better if design is simple.

Skeumorphism is what differentiates the tastes of Jobs and Ive. Flat design, like Ive, got loose and lost its way.

One of the problems with skeumorpism is that it tends to be difficult to localize: I guess European people discovered how a US post box looks like with the first e-mail clients, 20 years ago. It was far from intuitive.
