I've said this many times before, but the problem isn't social media as a product category, and it isn't ads as a business model. The problem is Facebook itself, its deeply toxic leadership and its deeply toxic social and political impact.
Perhaps with different leadership and a completely different company culture, Facebook could even be a good product. But as it exists now, it is not compatible with liberal democracy, and one of the two will have to give.
Ben Thompson from Stratechery made the argument that the Justice department should have never allowed the acquisition of Instagram. I'm hopeful that competition can take down FB. Strava is a good example of niche-based social networks.
I taught my children critical thinking from the start, they seem to suffer less than the majority from exposure to negative influences. Better (balanced) education would alleviate many of our social woes. People forget children are equally smart as adults but less experienced.
Difficult to not take your view point w/o a grain of salt given that you work for a major rival. Respect your POV but personally find it hyper exxaggated. Having seen effect of FB and twitter on Arab spring and its power, all these fears about FB re democracy are misguided
Fair, but consider that I've been writing about Facebook for years before I joined Google, back when I had no idea I would ever join Google. And if I were to leave the company tomorrow it would not change my opinion one bit
