Pretty much everything wrong about our perception of AI technologies (among both researchers and the general public) boils down to excessive anthropomorphism.
-
-
Quite so, yet the cartoons are still putting lifeforms out of jobs.
-
They aren't. Some lifeforms make personnel decisions based on the existence of the cartoons. Technology doesn't do anything in the economy by itself. People use it to do things.

So much of the work being done by for-profit companies doesn't help with this, I feel. Of course the public has an overblown and anthropomorphized view of AI.... that's the package companies have been selling since the Furby.

So... if AI in the late 50's was B&W cartoons, today's AI/ML would be something like Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

The Turing movie had a great line. A machine will never think like a human.

The imminent skynet-scenario in the public consciousness is frustrating. AI is not even at the ameba stage & sentience is pure scifi. But there is some valid concern over data ethics, augmentation of human bias thru dataset choice, & downwind socio-political consequences.

"AI has yet to get started" I have been trying to get this message across for over 15 years. The science is in a very strange state. If you have energy to confer on this offline, maybe we can do something about it together that might shift things. It's gone on too long.

Stop calling it artificial intelligence would be a start, as it’s not a description but a marketing label given to machine learning algorithms. Academics should know better, but we only seem to get kudos these days for using hype words.

How are human abstractions being encoded into current AI models?
