To be specific, I would say that the superintelligence apocalypse is to religion what hard sci-fi is to the fantasy genre. Same content and purpose, but with a veneer of rational plausibility that makes it easier for scientific minds to suspend disbelief

It seems to me that even if there is only, say, a .1% chance of human level AI being developed in the next few decades, the consequences are so extreme that the possibility deserves to be carefully considered.

Does it really help them “make sense” of anything? Religion provides (flawed and unhelpful) explanations of how the world came about and why it is the way it is, but a future robotic god can’t explain what’s happening today.
