At the end of the day, even physicists need fantasy stories to make sense of the world.

To be specific, I would say that the superintelligence apocalypse is to religion what hard sci-fi is to the fantasy genre. Same content and purpose, but with a veneer of rational plausibility that makes it easier for scientific minds to suspend disbelief

I used to buy into this eschatological dogma, but the more I learned about the more this dogma seemed less and less plausible

Meh... do you have proper stats about physicists who are into that? If nope... then hard to say it's popular among them.

I don’t think this is really right. Getting paperclipped is just a rhetorical stand in for “runaway optimization process that operates on a scale difficult for single humans to reason about (with incentives not necessarily human-aligned) ends up destroying humanity”
-
“Super intelligent AI” is one particular choice of “runaway optimization process”, but the argument transfers (and is equally valid) for a corporation or even a country.

Maybe the physicists are upset over computer scientists receiving much more attention in the 21st century.

In a way, we're already paperclipped. We turn rivers into water bottles, forests into palm oil, mountains into stone slabs. AI will optimize those processes and make ever more paperclips. I think that's a very real threat.
