To be clear, this isn't because the human mind is some kind of sacred mystery. Intelligence can be rigorously defined and measured. But when you do it, you realize that none of what we've built so far is actually intelligent. So far, at least. We will get to it eventually.

What is intelligence, according to you?

"AI is anything that has not been done yet." - Tesler's Theorem. We tend to discount what has been achieved by casting it away from what we consider AI. As we computationally solve problems, the less mystical and "intelligent" they seem; nonetheless, our progress stands true.
-
Discounting this progress seems to be the new cool thing, but maybe that's just because we're realizing how complicated our intelligence is. We're moving towards a shifting target, and as anyone familiar with Q-learning will attest to, that can be quite unstable

Perhaps you are focussing too much on the word "intelligence"! Artificial, says it all - no pretensions.
-
It was the original goal of the founders of the field. The syllogism went: "The brain manipulates symbols, the computer manipulates symbols, therefore the computer can do everything the brain can do".

I describe
#AI as efforts to perform functions that previously required human cognition or perception. I think it’s fair to say that achievements in classification count as “AI” under most definitions. The human mind performs innumerable acts of classification daily. -
Valid definition, IMO. If we stick to functionalist definitions of mental states, AI is no misnomer. Saying 'functional equivalence isn't enough' seems like question-begging some essentialist yet-to-be-defined mental quality special to humans... if not species chauvinism.

Congratulations, you are now one step closer to physical reality. Now to address the word "artificial" does an artificial switch actual work?

Define intelligence.

You know it when you see it
