New startups, open-source applications, and big co services will emerge to make use of this data. It's one of the most cost-effective way to foster innovation, and, unlike research & education (which are also critical), it has short-term returns

http://data.gov was created for this purpose in 2008, mostly hosting simpler datasets. It can be a lot more comprehensive with options such as model sharing. I guess we need Obama to come back.

We don't think APIs are the answer. For many applications, you need to see the entire dataset. We have a really simple, open source format for data sharing called Dolt. It's Git semantics around a SQL database. https://www.dolthub.com .

Unfortunately, the eventual end game is for-profit co's lobbying the govt to handicap the govt orgs that gave the data for free in the first place. Strong licensing laws and non-compete clauses need to be in place for this to not back fire. Recent Ex: https://youtu.be/qMGn9T37eR8
