The Social Network (2010) did not exactly intend to depict its subject in a positive light, but it seems the takeaway for everyone who watched it was "this nerd got crazy rich & successful by making a website, making websites is cool now, also nerds are cool now"

The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) also had a similar reception. "Securities fraud is cool now"

In popular culture, money is the ultimate brand

I've never thought of this before, but it seems that this is actually the case. Especially with The Wolf of Wall Street. People thought it was cool. I wonder if it had something to do with the 'comedic' way the story was told.

I would add "... in America". Living in both, I noticed that it is definitely less true in Europe (for the best, imho). I don't know about other cultures...

That was my first reaction too, but my feeling is that Europe is definitely not immune to this.

Try this one on for size: it's ok to screw over a whole country as long as you make bank.

I don’t tnk the probl is pop culture: I’ve believed for some time now that Americans confuse money for virtue and are willing to follow people who make money as gurus. (and I say “Americans” because coming from abroad I’ve noticed how peculiar the idolatry of the moneyed is here)

I think the main focus was on the bad guys. It's not that we only care about money, it's that we pick the familiar side. In Social Network the other side was depicted as a party animal that forgot his responsibilities. In WoWS we saw him living a crappy life and improving it
