I think it's possible to create a social network where the interaction modalities are such that it won't immediately degenerate into extreme toxicity. Empathy is as much part of human nature as anger or jealousy. But public, anonymous reply buttons only encourage the latter.

Yes. There’s a lot of literature about crime (and other social misdemeanours) breeding where anonymity is rife. Our brains appear to be limited to maintaining ~150 other peers (see primate brain size vs social group size). Internet is just too large and anonymous as-is.
-
I don't think size is the issue per se. We've lived in cities far larger than 150 people without social order breaking down. While rudeness does exist, it's orders of magnitude less toxic than the internet.

You never had a pen pal? I wrote some thoughts on empathy in Notion. Send me a DM and if you would like to read. Id be curious your reaction.
-
If your pen pal asked you for money would you send it to them?

I can't for the life of me find the article but I remember reading a study abut an app or game that simply reminded their users to be nice to each other before playing, it had a noticeable impact on the amount of abuse complaints received for something so simple.

Some stuff I've been thinking around this: - limiting responses over time, or introducing artificial delays between read and reply - detecting anger in posts, hiding the post, and asking half an hour later if you still want to post that - limiting posts per day or even read time
