I think it's possible to create a social network where the interaction modalities are such that it won't immediately degenerate into extreme toxicity. Empathy is as much part of human nature as anger or jealousy. But public, anonymous reply buttons only encourage the latter.
One hypothesis is that empathy in humans is fundamentally tied to being present with others and seeing their face, and thus all text-based online interactions are geared against empathy. I don't think this is insurmountable, though
empathy is meaningless when it is depersonalized, which mass interaction platforms such as instagram or twitter encourage
You wouldn't have empathy in the first place because it involves mirror neurons which is a strictly one on one experience

I dont understand this obsession with identity. Why are we looking to go after people for the crime of offending sensibilities, ironically in the name of empathy. Why such a narcissistic desire to control public discourse?
slow the user down. use purposeful friction. place something within the journey which helps them reflect on how their contribution serves them and if it's something they want to say as if in a public place.
Harder to monetize imo is the problem, undoubtedly most of us life irl without constant trolling and toxicity so its possible just that most of the people we know aren't trying maximize the attention we pay to them
Step 1: Find a way to mask away someone's identity-related visual and audio features while keeping retaining all the micro-expressions and emotional features. Step 2: Create a new digital hangout space where people can actually sense each other's avatars and interact.
