i immediately think of kitchen utensils or appliances that only serve one purpose (thank you Alton Brown). they're either very, very helpful or nearly entirely useless.
It's not very hard to build something simple that does one thing well. But being all things to all people while staying relatively simple requires a tremendous amount of design work
